Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to the protocols that allow voice-based phone calls to be conducted over the internet rather than through a local phone carrier. Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that converts your voice into a digital signal, compresses it, and transmits it over the internet. A VoIP service provider sets up the call between all parties. At the receiving end, the digital data is decompressed into the sound you hear through your mobile phone or loudspeaker. But can you use VoIP with any type of existing phone?
Existing Phones:
You may have already made a large financial investment in the public phones you currently use. If you have an analogue telephone adapter, you may still use them for VoIP. The fundamental idea behind the adapter is that it enables your phone to function with VoIP technology, which basically uses the internet to convert speech data into digital packets.
Soft Phones:
The term “soft-phone” refers to a phone that is not tangible. It is a piece of software that is installed on a computer or other device. You may make phone calls using the keypad on its user interface. It takes the place of your real phone and doesn’t require an adapter to operate because it was made specifically for web use. Zoiper is an example of a softphone. Softphones are a feature of communication software systems like Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business. Softphones might be set up to work with SIP accounts.
IP Handsets:
Another type of VoIP-compatible phone is an IP handset. It isn’t autonomous in the sense that it was designed to be used with a softphone and linked to a laptop. An IP handset resembles a cell phone and comes with a USB cord for connecting to a laptop. It features a keyboard for a computer so you can dial numbers. IP handsets are rather expensive and require considerable setup to function.
Smartphones:
A dial pad and softphones are included in almost all VoIP software that you instal on smartphones and tablet computers. The two platforms with the most VoIP apps are Android and iOS. However, there are also a sizable number of these apps available for different operating systems including BlackBerry and Windows Phones.
